Gill, James

290230 Lipstick Marilyn Study II

James Gill Bio

Famed Pop Art icon, James Gill, has pieces in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, The Whitney, The Smithsonian Institute, Art Institute of Chicago and the National Portrait Gallery.

One of his many Marilyn pieces was a triptych shown in Time magazine three weeks after her death. Gill's art is said to "reflect qualities of a contemporary consciousness and a classical tradition".

Gill was part of the 1969 Sao Paulo 9 show featuring Edward Hopper, Robert Indiana, Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg, Robert Rauschenburg, Andy Warhol and Tom Wesselmann. He helped define pop art in the 1960's and walked away from the art scene in 1972.

He has several original works now available at Kavanaugh Art Gallery.
