WHO ARE YOU?

T. Bill Andrews

This painting arises out of my ongoing fascination with wrestling order out of chaos. In this painting, I seek to represent in abstract form the very fabric of who we are. Why we act as we do, why we see the world as we do, why we are who we are. This painting is really the end-result of a mistake. While trying to find information on the MMPI (the Minnesota MultiPhasic Inventory), a colleague misunderstood me and directed me to something called the MBTI in a book called "Please Understand Me II." The MBTI (Myers Briggs Type Indicator) is a personality inventory test that has been around for a long time. I doubt I would have ever invested the time or effort necessary to take the full test (or even the version in that book), but a short, unofficial version of the test can be taken in just a couple of minutes for free at: http://www.humanmetrics.com/cgi-win/JTypes2.asp The MBTI is based on Jungian psychology and divides us all into 16 personality types with four components. In a sense, the test only tells us what we tell it, and what we each already know about ourselves but have never taken the time to systematize. Reading the results of my test was like cracking open a fortune cookie and finding my street address and suit measurements inside. It was revelatory. And it gave me great peace of mind that I ''made sense" and that there were others out there like me. These results produced a sense of sheer exhilaration, followed by an incredible calming effect. I had found peace with myself. Suddenly, I could explain to myself why I don't want to learn all the words to the songs I love, why I have no intellectual interest in mastering a foreign language, why I always want to put things in order. Then for a short while there was some psychic upset, as I contemplated if "this was as good as it gets," in other words, can I ever rise above my psychological predisposition's. I then quickly worked through that phase to my current state, which is one of greater personal understanding, acceptance and self-awareness. I find, for instance, that I am better able to identify at the outset whether a particular project is really something that will interest me. This painting is directly derived from a pretty, colorful grid graphic on one of the many Internet websites that attempt to interpret MBTI results at: http://www.typelogic.com/ I loved the idea of trying to represent personality with raw color. Other interesting websites include: http://www.keirsey.com/sixteenroles.html and http://www.story.thespark.com/person/ and http://www3.bc.sympatico.ca/ epsilon/intj.htm
