T. Bill Andrews creates paintings, typically with textured accents,
on large canvas in the action painting tradition of Jackson Pollock
and other abstract expressionists. Bill studied the work of Pollock
while at the University of Iowa and came to believe that with the advent
of photography and film, the meaning of representational art collapsed
upon itself. In this ruin and rubble are found the elements of beauty
in modern art. Bill extends this metaphor in paintings by often incorporating
rubble in his paintings.
Bill views his expansive, wall-sized abstracts as a response to the
concrete confines of his experience as an attorney. His interest lies
in exploring the threshold of art and personal emotion as expressed
by the counterplay of color and texture in multiple media.
When family and friends began referring to his home as "the Gallery" and
requesting custom-made works, Bill realized there might be a larger
audience for his artwork.
Bill was an engineering watch supervisor and instructor in the U.S.
Navy Nuclear Program and received his degree with High Distinction
from the University of Iowa, where he was a published member of the
undergraduate Iowa Writers' Workshop. Bill then attended Yale Law School
where he was on the Yale Law Journal, a Judicial Law Clerk, and a student
prosecutor.
Upon graduation Bill worked for one of Iowa's largest corporate law
firms. In early 1994 he founded his own law firm representing consumers
and their families. Bill prefers to work on large canvas and murals
to explore the vibrance of nonfigurative chaos in an all too ordered
world.
Custom commissions have incorporated an interior's color palate and
even fabrics. Bill's Motto: "If you have a large, white wall, I want
to fill it all."
