Artist Statement I prefer visual arts to all other forms of art. As an artist, I strive for the appropriate expression of what is, to me, the real object of all art, rather than merely try to create a sculpture for the eye. What am I today and what do I do with my art? I often ask myself. The action of my hands, the later marks on a clay surface, the joy of converting a block, an image, and a fantasy into something genuine, solid and original. My father, sculptor as well, used to say to me: I don't forget that art means struggle. With you I am no longer alone in art, and neither are you. So go on without fear. Love your land was the advice with which he often addressed to me. It shall be the greatest inspiration for you. And it is, as it is for him. My land, my roots, the first steps, my mother always there for me, a memory of narrow streets with boutiques, a smell of bread as it was baked and so on, means so much to me. Mikael Sogoian |
