August Laux b 1847, d 1921

According to the 1910 Who's Who in America, August Laux came from the Rhine Pfalz, Bavaria, and moved to New York with his parents in 1863. He was born on 18 Dec. 1847 to Henry and Barbara Laux. After commencing studies at the National Academy of Design, he exhibited there for the first time in 1870. On 9 March 1876, Laux married Emilia Heisterhazen of Hesse Cassel. Four years later, in 1880, he changed his typical subject matter from decorative work (murals and architectural decoration) to still life's and genre paintings. In 1910, Laux lived at 65 Chauncey St., Brooklyn, but was not listed as belonging to any professional associations. He seems to have been interested in very tame subject matter, content to contemplate the surface of quiet, pastoral scenes and homely objects
